Trademarks - timeframe and costs

Assuming there are no problems, a UK trademark normally takes around 6 months. A European Union Trade Mark (EUTM) usually takes around 7 months to be granted.

There is also a system for obtaining multiple national Trademarks through a single application using the ‘Madrid Protocol’, which takes around 12-18 months.

The cost to file and register a Trademark is dependent upon the number of classes (range of products and services) for which protection is required.

Products and services are grouped together into 45 different ‘classes’. The more classes the application covers, the higher the costs.

As a rough guideline, a UK Trademark application covering one class of goods or services would cost around £800.00 with an extra £200.00 for the second class and an extra £100.00 for each additional class.
