A patent is an intellectual property right granted by a country's government as a territorial right for a limited period.

Simply, it’s a document that states you are the legal owner of the technical content disclosed within.   Patents make it illegal for anyone except the owner or someone with the owners permission to make, use, import or sell the invention in the country where the patent was granted.

Patents are vital when investing in and pursuing research and development and are asset (intangible) that can be sold, licensed and rented. Importantly a patent provides potential buyers, licensees or investors with the confidence to collaborate with you, knowing their investment is underpinned by a legal right.

I want to patent protect my new product idea...
what do I do ?

To protect your new product idea or invention from being copied, you must submit a patent application to the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

A patent is an intellectual property right issued by a government, providing territorial rights for a limited timeframe. It serves as a legal document confirming your ownership of the disclosed material, such as a product or invention, granting you exclusive rights to pursue it without competition in the designated territory. Patents prohibit anyone other than the owner, or those with the owner’s permission, from making, using, importing, or selling the patented material in the country where the patent is granted.

The process involves seven stages :

  • Drafting the application.

  • Filing the application.

  • After 12 months Requesting a preliminary search for the patent.

  • Six months later: Publication of the patent.

  • Six months later: Requesting a substantive examination of the patent.

  • Approximately 12-24 months later: The patent examiner provides the examination report.

  • Approximately 12 months later: The IPO either grants or refuses the application.
